Playing Ducks and Drakes
Did you know that in the late 16th Century, bowls was the national sport? Sir Francis Drake was reputed to have been playing when the supposedly invincible Spanish Armada crept up to the south coast of England in 1588. Drake was second-in-command to Admiral Charles Howard in the victory over the Spanish fleet. England lost just 100 men compared the 20,000 men and 51 ships lost by the Spanish.
